Nutrition can have a huge impact on the health of guppies, as certain proteins in the body of the fish can act as "antibiotics." When those proteins are missing or in short supply, the immune system is compromised.

According to Dr. Anderson of Hoffman-La Roche. "With the exception of pyridoxine, folic acid, and choline most vitamins have been shown to affect the humoral response directly. The three mentioned vitamins along with vitamin B12 are concerned with nucleic acid metabolism and indirectly affect immune response via protein synthesis."

Nutrition directly affects the guppy's immune system and indirectly affects guppy growth. When the guppy's immune system is stimulated by the presence of infectious organisms, the absorption of and metabolism of nutrients can be affected. Malnutrition leads to lowered resistance to disease, and a vicious cycle occurs, according to Dr. Anderson.

Stress can also have an affect on the guppy's use of nutrients. When the guppy is under stress (because of poor water conditions or crowding, for example), the guppy has an increased energy and vitamin requirement. At the same time there is a lowering of the immune system's ability to cope. A guppy under stress will secrete high levels of stress hormones. According to Dr. Anderson, high levels of stress hormones are known to be immunosuppressive. "It has been shown in terrestrial animals and fish that the immune system can be modulated with dietary micronutrients. Anti-stress properties are exhibited in particular by carotenoids, vitamin C, and vitamin E."

Stress kann auch einen Einfluss auf die Nutzung von Nährstoffen beim Guppy haben. Wenn der Guppy unter Stress ist (wegen der schlechten Wasserbedingungen oder übermäßigem Besatz, zum Beispiel), hat der Guppy einen erhöhten Energie-und Vitaminbedarf. Gleichzeitig gibt es eine Verringerung der Wirkung des Immunsystems. Ein Guppy unter Stress wird ein hohes Maß an Stresshormonen erzeugen.
